Enterprise Zoning

This area was originally known as Thorn Grove or Bloom. When the town incorporated in 1892, it officially adopted the name "Chicago Heights."

What began as an agricultural center moved forward after 1900 and saw newly developed industrial technology enter and begin the bridge to the next millennium.

At this time, the first zoning regulations were put into effect to ensure residential areas were separate from industrial sites.

The makeup and pattern of the community took on a more diverse and interesting atmosphere as industry found a home here. Steel manufacturing, chemical plants and other manufacturing facilities hire an ethnically diverse labor pool.

About Chicago Heights

Chicago Heights' downtown area has been completely refurbished with new paving, new lighting, a regional Pace transfer station and fresh, attractive landscaping. We've eliminated some older structures and now area businesses are building new facilities in this commercial neighborhood. Even more improvements and development plans are yet underway.

Joining your business in this renaissance are St. James Hospital, a major provider of healthcare services in the Chicago Southland, Old Second Bank, a presence in Chicago Heights for decades, Intercon Solutions, Innophos, St. Agnes School, also expanding to meet the needs of a growing enrollment, South Star Services, Union Street Gallery.  When you bring your business to Chicago Heights, you'll also enjoy our advantageous geographical location. Chicago Heights has always been attractive to a large variety of businesses. The city is approximately three miles south of Interstates 294 and 80, and three miles west of Interstate 394. The Port of Chicago is conveniently located nearby. Several railroads traverse Chicago Heights, which has been designated an Illinois Enterprise Zone. Our businesses, residents, and visitors enjoy the convenience of well-established two-way roads.
